Every four minutes someone dies of leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, or myeloma. That sentence alone quickens my breath and breaks my heart. At that four minute mark, a child that I have loved, held, and nurtured for 10 years became that statistic. I held my son Chase’s hand and quietly sang him to sleep as I watched the minute hand on that clock take him from me as he took his last breath. Since that dreadful night of March 10, 2008, I have made it my mission to help keep his wish alive by fighting against this evil monster. This is why I am honored to be nominated for the title of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year. I am running in memory of him and in honor of my great nephew, who at eleven was diagnosed a week prior to Chase. For this I ask you to help me help those that CAN help turn on that light against this boogey man called cancer. Help me be their voice when they can’t be heard.
